About what is the best way to travel from Detroit to Key West

What is the best way to travel from Detroit to Key West?
My wife and I are thinking about taking a vacation in february or March to Key west. What is the best (and cheapest) way to get there, and what are the best ways to travel? Should we fly the whole way, or fly to Fl and take a boat? Is it cheaper to fly earlier or latter in the week? Any suggestions are welcome! thanks!

If you're going to drive there, take I-75 all the way down to Miami, then take hwy 1 to Key West. I think airfares are cheaper at the beginning and middle of the week. I don't know anything about boating.

When I went to Key West a few years back, I flew on Spirit from DTW into FLL and then rented a car and drove to Key West. It's only about a 4 hour drive, but this way you can see all of the Keys - well worth the drive!

I would fly the entire way. You can fly into Ft Lauderdale or Miami, but be prepared for a long drive down. It is a 2 lane road and can take about 5 hours at times. Or you can fly into Key West or Marathon. Flying into Marathon would be nice, then you could drive the rest of the way and still have a nice drive through the keys without it being too long of a drive. have a great time, Key West is one of my favorite places to go.

Mid-week to mid-week usually offers cheapest fares to anywhere in the Florida area (Wednesday to Tuesday). I didn't do too badly Sunday to Wednesday for my next trip. It seems like if you avoid concentrating yourself around Friday & Saturday nights you'll save. I found, a 1 stop airfare as low as $360 per person round trip on orbitz for a Wednesday to Tuesday (stopping in either Atlanta or Miama). But you'd go right to Key West. You could fly non-stop from Detroit to Ft. Myers, FL for $175 per person then take the Key West Express boat for $128 per person round trip for a total of $308. Another option is to fly into Miami (non-stops are as low as $180) and take the Key West Express boat for $102 per person, for a total of $282 per person. Here's the boat info: http://www.keywestshuttle.com/rates.htm I've taken the Ft. Myers-Key West & back route and it is a lovely trip, but it takes 3 full hours. The nice thing is that when you book, you tell them what day you will be returning. This would allow you to stay a night or two in Miami or Ft. Myers (if you want). If all you want is Key West, I say go direct, pay a little extra on airfare, have 1 stopover, but you probably won't need a rental car once you are on the island! If you would like to see Miami or Ft. Myers areas, then it might be worthwhile for you to save a few dollars on the airfare and take the boat. The cost difference is not that huge that I would recommend you do one or the other.
