Travel itinerary suggestions for our trip to Detroit?
We are planning to visit Utica, MI for a wedding in mid-August for a long weekend (probably Thursday-Tuesday). The wedding is Saturday evening. What should we do in the meantime? I would love itinerary suggestions! We are from the Washington, DC area and are pretty clueless about the Detroit area but hear there are some lovely/interesting places. We will have a rental car. EDIT: Thanks for the suggestions! Also, what about day-trips? Where would you go outside of the city? Detroit - 5 Answers

If you like the Motown sound, visit the original home of the label at 2648 West Grand Boulevard. Here, the original Motown recording studio has been preserved as a museum. (It's amazing what great sounds came out of such primitive conditions.) There's also the Detroit Zoo, on Woodward Avenue in Royal Oak. In Dearborn, you can visit the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. There are also three casinos in the city, if such places interest you; the MGM Grand, Greektown, and the Motor City Casino.

Detroit Zoo is outside the city ( its in Royal Oak) The Henry Ford museum and village is outside the city( its in Dearborn) if your in town the 3rd week of August- make sure you cruise on Woodward Ave ( most happening spot is between 15 mile and 9 mile) the annual Woodward Dream cruise is that Saturday but car enthusiasts are in town almost the entire week http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:R4OtnOnAmEIJ:www.madmanmike.com/woodward_dream_cruise.html+2011+Woodward+Dream+Crusie&cd=5&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&source=www.google.com Starting August 20th is the Michigan Renaissance Festival- in Holly MI http://www.michrenfest.com/

Most of the suggestions you were given were outside the city. I strongly recommend the Detroit Institute of Arts, where you can see Diego Rivera's famous mural (it spans four walls of the lovely Garden Court in the museum). Take a drive from Downtown east along Jefferson Avenue all the way to Metropolitan Parkway (16 Mile Road). You will pass through some more blighted parts of the city, but you will also see lovely Grosse Pointe, which was where the old money in Detroit lived (all the auto execs in the early days). Please stop at Pewabic Pottery, a famous and historic artistic treasure. If you take the People Mover while Downtown, you'll see Pewabic tile in some of the People Mover stations. You will also see it at Comerica Park (if you see a Detroit Tigers game). I've been to DC many times and I regret that we have very little mass transit, so you'll be glad you have a rental car. On the positive side, parking is cheap in Detroit. We want you to enjoy driving. There's a free lot attached to Pewabic Pottery, and the DIA has a low cost lot nearby (or street parking). While at the DIA, you'll be very close to the Detroit Science Center, which is fun with or without kids. I'm a lifelong Detroiter. Thanks for visiting our lovely city.

If you have a family, then the Henry Ford and Greenfield Village is something you have to do. If it's just adults, they have some pretty nice casinos.
