You definitely need a passport, and a visa if you're staying for over 90 days. If you want to rent a car, you need an International Drivers' License. You should also visit some other places besides Detroit... Chicago is right near by and we're a much nicer place to visit!

Speaking as a Detroiter. Don't come to Detroit. I mean it's...falling down. Since the eighties we've lost almost a million people. There's no jobs. Government is corrupt. It's just sadness radiating from Campus Martius out until the distant suburbs. But definitely get a drivers license, there is virtually no public transportation. The bus system is awful and sometimes they get shot at. We have a monorail train that goes to seven stops at best. You need to drive. Drive on the main streets by the way. Don't take a detour down a charming side street. If it's at night, and you come up to a red light and you see people around...might be a good idea just to drive right on through.

You will need a passport for international travel. https://www.passports.gov.au/Web/index.aspx .. To visit the United States you will either need a visa to be obtained from the U.S. Embassy or a Consulate General if you plan to stay longer than 90 days or you will need a travel authorization (ESTA) to be obtained online free of charge. To get the ESTA you will need your passport details, your e-mail address and a telephone number, that's it. The flight and address details are not mandatory and those columns can be omitted on your application. The authorization is valid for two years or until your passport expires and grants you the right to apply for admission to the United States under the visa waiver program and stay for up to 90 days on each visit. http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/id_visa/esta/ .. http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/without/without_1990.html .. http://canberra.usembassy.gov/consular/ ..
